The Sea of Itoshima, Fukuoka

Today, I would like to introduce another beautiful place from my hometown, Fukuoka.

Just west of Fukuoka City lies Itoshima, a coastal area known for its beautiful beaches, open skies, and views across the Genkai Sea.
One of the things I love about Itoshima is how quickly the landscape changes as you leave the city.

The buildings gradually disappear.
The road begins to follow the coastline.
And suddenly, the blue sea opens up in front of you.
On a clear summer day, the water can be remarkably beautiful.
Deep blue farther from the shore.
Clearer shades of blue and green near the coast.
White clouds moving across the sky.

It can be difficult to believe that the center of Fukuoka is not far away.
Itoshima has become increasingly popular in recent years, with small cafés, restaurants, galleries, and workshops appearing along the coast.
But for me, the greatest attraction remains the landscape itself.

The sea.
The wind.
The sound of the waves.
And the changing light across the water.

The coast faces the Genkai Sea, which has connected northern Kyushu with the Asian continent since ancient times.
For centuries, these waters were not simply the edge of Japan.
They were a route through which people, goods, and cultures traveled between Japan, Korea, China, and the wider world.

Today, however, the atmosphere along the coast is wonderfully peaceful.
People come here to swim, drive along the seaside, watch the sunset, or simply spend some time looking at the ocean.
For visitors from overseas, Itoshima offers a side of Fukuoka that can easily be missed.
Fukuoka is known for its food, lively streets, and modern city life.
But travel only a short distance from the city, and another landscape appears.

Blue sea.
Open sky.
Green mountains.
And the relaxed rhythm of life along the coast.
This is also Fukuoka.

And especially in summer, the sea of Itoshima is one of my favorite landscapes in my hometown.
